I love your take on so many things. The article on feminism and name-changing/shaving/heels hit home.
I was married in 1973…and had to go to court the next day to make sure my “maiden” name remained my own (this was in Boston.) It was not clear at that time a woman could legally keep her own name after marriage. We were married in a JP’s office, me wearing the navy blue suit my mother insisted on buying …which did serve for job interviews.
Fast forward 20 years. My husband complained he never knew which name a restaurant reservation was under…. I thought about it, realized that in middle age, the battle is against complacency and usual and customary ruts. I told him I would change my name IF he handled all the paperwork AND I got to pick out a “name change” ring. I love rings, and decided it was something I wanted. We both earned the same money…so it was not that he “bought” it, but that it was part of a bargain I got from his kvetching.
I stopped wearing my wedding ring (a copy of a ring I had given him when we decided to get married and I said getting a ring was his problem,as I already took care of my obligation.)…and only wear the one I picked out….and another ring I got when my Dad died. My father told me he could never respect a man who would not give a women his name…..HA! That was when I told him I was going to live with the man I later married. When i want my mother to join me at an event (she died 40 years ago) I wear a ring of hers. I also have a sister ring, and a grandmothers’ ring…
Anyway, rarely shave, don’t wear makeup or heals or skirts for that matter….love good haircuts, clothes and jewelry….
What is life if not compromise? We all pick and choose where to make our stands.
As an atheist, also love the article about gods and health care. I personally think religion is something that is baked into humans as a result of some gene which somehow helps the species survive. Makes no more sense but serves a purpose in helping many people get through life…the good and the bad.
