I enjoyed your Salon column very much. I have the identical question about agnostics, such as myself. I do not deny the existence of a god or gods, I just don’t care. I think religion is ridiculous and destructive, but I think the hard position that there is no, for lack of a better word, God, is just as doctrinaire. The argument is framed as evangelists vs. atheists, which leaves people like me (and most of the people I know) out of the conversation entirely. I just think the belief that human minds can grasp and pronounce judgment on the ultimate matters (origin, meaning of life, destiny, etc.) is false arrogance. I don’t know a damned thing.
